A once “morbidly obese” woman has undergone an astonishing transformation after a photo of herself on holiday shocked her into losing nearly seven stone.
Zoe Langham, 29, is totally unrecognisable after ditching the takeaways and snacks and opting for healthy meals and exercise.
She was tipping the scales at 15st 8lb and feeling very unhappy about her appearance when she decided it was time to cut down on the carbs.
But it was a picture of herself on holiday in Majorca in 2018 that pushed her to make the lifestyle change.
So in the following January she plucked up the courage to join her local slimming group – and within two years she had lost an impressive six-and-a-half stone.
“I feel great. I feel more energised, I don’t feel as sluggish, and my skin is a lot better,” she said.
“I used to get out of breath walking around shops or walking up the stairs but that doesn’t happen anymore. There are just loads of health benefits both internally and externally.”
Zoe said she had always been bigger than many of her friends but never really let it affect her. However as the years went by she said her weight became more of an issue.
“I got into a relationship and just became comfortable. When I went on holiday in September 2018 and saw a particular photo of myself it made me think: ‘Oh my God, is that actually me? Is that what I look like?’
“At that point I knew I needed to do something about my weight. That was the turning point.”
After initial hesitancy Zoe from Thornhill, Cardiff, decided that her New Year’s resolution for 2019 would be to join her local Slimming World group.
When she first went Zoe admitted she was nervous about being weighed weekly and how others in the group would perceive her. “For my height and my age I was morbidly obese,” admitted Zoe, who is 29 and 5ft 3in.
“I had seen loads of success stories before, including my own sister, but I didn’t think it would work for me. I didn’t understand the whole concept behind it,” she added. “But I decided to take the plunge and it was the best thing I could have done.”
The programme works by drilling home the message that all meals must be fresh and prepared in batches – not fast food or takeaway.
And it helped having others going through the same journey to confide in she was having a bad week or struggling to find motivation, Zoe said.
Currently Zoe weighs a far healthier 9st 1lb and is keen to get others to join Slimming World for their own physical and mental wellbeing.
She added: “Don’t be scared and go for it because you will not look back. I think a lot of people are nervous about taking that initial step but it helps all ages and both genders. There are plans for everybody.”
